SBESS Presidential Candidates & Platforms

SBE Students,

On February 1st and 2nd, you will be electing your School of Business & Economics Students’ Society President for 2012/2013. Given the significance of this, I truly encourage all of you to get informed, get to know the candidates, and vote – ensure that you have a say in what happens within your school.

With that being said, I am proud to introduce you to the SBESS Presidential Candidates; Adam Lawrence, Brandon Van Dam, Jordan Bishop, and Sarina Bruni, and their platforms.

Adam Lawrence

Adam Lawrence

Hello SBE,

My name is Adam Lawrence and I am in my third year of the BBA program. Over the past three years I have had the opportunity to work with SBESS on the Corporate Relations team as well as many other organizations on campus. As the Vice President of Corporate Relations I have connected more organizations to the SBE, brought students closer to reputable employers and careers while overseeing the attainment of nearly $50,000 in sponsorship for the SBE and its clubs. My experience, passion and dedication to this organization make me your best candidate as President of the School of Business and Economics Students’ Society.

As President I will:

  1. Offer naming rights to the SBESS
    • Offering naming rights to the SBESS will increase the effectiveness of the organization as a whole. As the SBE administration searches for naming rights to our school I intend to lead the SBESS in the same direction. This initiative will bring external knowledge for the members of our organization and increase capital flow for the success of our events.
  2. Pursue and implement an Honourary President
    • The attainment of an Honourary President as representation for the SBESS will increase the prestige and recognition of our brand, initiatives, and overall effectiveness outside the walls of the SBE exponentially.
  3. Continued transparency within the SBESS and its clubs
    • Ensuring that the SBE student body is fully aware of the actions and operations of the SBESS council to instill full confidence in our organization and its initiatives while increasing the value of every SBE student’s degree beyond the classroom.

Your vote, your student experience, your SBE.

Brandon Von Dam

Brandon Van Dam

Hello SBE, to those of you who don’t know me my name is Brandon Van Dam a third year BBA student and Presidential Candidate for this year’s SBESS election; and I am running in this campaign based on my experience, so that I can utilize what I have gained here at Laurier to give back to the SBE Students.

SBESS is anything but new to me as I have been on the council for the past three years, most recently in the role as Executive Corporate Relations Manager, where I played an integral role to achieve the most corporate sponsorship to date! I also just completed a semester as a BU111 TA, where I had the first hand experience to see the lasting impact I had on my first year students.

As you can tell I am proud to be a part of the SBE, and the SBESS has played a major role in my time here at Laurier. It is now my goal to represent YOU, the SBE student body, both here on campus and across Canada.

My platform is simple and revolves around Putting Students First; including open communication, continued transparency, and moving the SBESS and its respective clubs into a more cohesive group for the greater benefit of all. As your SBESS President I am here to help you and ensure that your voice and concerns are being heard, and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you.

Your Inner Leader

Mark Zuckerberg.

Michael Jordan.

Nelson Mandela.

What do these three have in common? They are each incredible leaders that lead with their values first. Now, I would like to introduce Your Inner Leader, a values-driven way of life extending far beyond the reaches of any single campaign.

The purpose of this summary is simply to familiarize the reader with my personal values. I will introduce to you three values I incorporate into my life in a variety of different ways, both professionally and personally.

1) Boldness: Mandela showed fantastic risk-taking and courage when he acted out against apartheid – by demonstrating more spontaneity and confidence in ourselves, we can all harness our Inner Leader – one who is not afraid to stand out to do what’s right.

2) Competition: Jordan is oft-regarded the greatest competitor ever, stemming from his undeniable discipline and work ethic. If we all show teamwork and great appetite, we too will develop an insatiable hunger for success, empowering us to achieve exactly that.

3) Entrepreneurship: Zuckerberg would settle for nothing less than the best when creating facebook, and it was his execution of massive ideas that propelled him onto the world stage. Entrepreneurs create value for those around them, and by igniting the entrepreneurial fire beneath each of us, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

With these three qualities, I have shared with you my inner leader, so now I pose to you this same, simple question: What’s yours?

Sarina Bruni

Sarina Bruni

Due to my extensive experience, years of involvement and my passion and commitment to the School of Business & Economics Students’ Society (SBESS) and the SBE, I would like to present my platform and campaign to be a representative for the student body in the role of the President of the SBESS.

My involvement as a student volunteer in various roles within the SBE, as well as roles with WLUSU have allowed me to garner experience from a variety of different positions.

My platform is comprised of a three tiered pyramid:

Communicating Value: The foundation of this pyramid begins with identifying what the ‘student voice’ is communicating and taking that information to provide students with what THEY want, not WHAT we can provide.

Demonstrating Value: All suggestions submitted by the student body will undergo an evaluation process to determine whether they are feasible. An ‘Advisory Board’ comprised of student representatives will monitor the progression of each student suggestion to ensure that all ideas are heard and processed.

Resulting Student and Club Value: Providing students and clubs with the resources and opportunities that they would not only appreciate, but have collaboratively identified as necessary for their success within the SBE. Value will be created for students and clubs by offering them desired and improved resources.

This tiered focus, allows students and clubs to act as both the catalyst and beneficiaries of the value added. All students will have an opportunity to participate at each tier of the pyramid to allow for student value and society accountability to be achieved. Students will have an influence at all tiers of the pyramid and will allow for fluid transparency and communication from students to the society.
