Filed under: SBEweekly — Alan @ 1:36 pm

February 8, 2012 from 7-9pm at Wilfrid Laurier University in the Hawk’s Nest (3rd floor of the Fred Nichol’s Campus Centre).

The event has been designed as an interactive workshop, with four phases – the idea, the resources, the sacrifices, the expansion – to create an engaging environment for students to learn about the field of social entrepreneurship and to ask questions in a relatively informal, comfortable setting.

The speakers we have approached for this event will be assigned to one of four stages to share their own experience and advice pertaining to the topic of that stage.

Popy Dimoulas, Founder & President of Charity Republic,
Rosemary Horwood, President of Opportunity International (YAO),
James Sun, 16 year old Tedx BC speaker,
Andrew MacDonald, Manager of Opportunity International

Baseball Operations Case Competition

Filed under: SBEweekly — Alan @ 3:37 pm
Hello, my name is Jay Ryu and I am looking to recruit 3-4 students to join me for the inaugural Baseball Operations Case Competition, held by SABR (Society of Baseball Research). It will take place March 15~17 in Mesa (very near Phoenix), Arizona. The cost is $1,375 per team, which will come out to be $275 per member.
The Case Competition will emphasize advanced statistical analysis on baseball players as well as business strategy and financial management in dissecting a typical baseball operations problem (e.g. proposed player transaction). The team will have the opportunity to present analysis and recommendations to a group of judges, which will include Major League Baseball front office execs. The team will have a dialog, receive feedback, and ultimately be evaluated by this panel of judges, based on the quality of insights and analysis.
The Case Competition is a perfect fit for the avid fantasy player who believes they can match strategy with baseball execs, or for anyone who aspires to work in a Major League front office. It’s a unique opportunity to demonstrate their talents and to network with current execs and other baseball industry insiders. Never before has there been a case competition solely focused on classic baseball operations issues–a perfect platform for any savvy analyst and student of the game, to differentiate themselves from the thousands who aspire to become baseball execs.

The 1st Annual Case Competition will be held in conjunction with SABR’s Baseball Analytics Conference–3 days of expert panels, guest speakers, research presentations, and networking events. Registration to participate in the Case Competition, will include admission to SABR’s Analytics Conference, which will be sponsored by Bloomberg Sports and include participation by MLB.com and members of FanGraphs, Baseball Reference, Baseball Prospectus, Hardball Times and other leading baseball analytic websites. For more information, please visit http://sabr.org/analytics/case or contact me at jh2ryu@uwaterloo.ca. Please get back to me as early as possible if you are interested, at least by next Thursday, February 2nd.
